Checking and changing your oil plus filter regularly is especially important when it comes to a used vehicle. The suggested timeframe between oil changes is 3,000 – 5,000 miles or every three months. However, referring to your specific vehicle's owner’s manual will give you a much more accurate timeframe. Make sure that if you are changing the oil yourself that you dispose of everything properly and read all instructions. Taking care of this routine maintenance for your car can prevent costly repairs down the road. Not changing your oil regularly can cause major problems to your vehicle and may even result in having to purchase another vehicle.
Check air filter:
Not checking your air filter regularly for dirt and clogs could cause some serious issues for your vehicle that could be costly. Make certain to check your filter on a regular basis so that you do not have to get unnecessary repairs done on your vehicle. This video can give you some helpful pointers on how to get this done:
Check fluids regularly:
Another crucial part of car maintenance is to check all of your fluids on a regular basis. Make sure that you check your transmission fluid, brake fluid, oil, and all other important fluids. Just remember that each vehicle is different when it comes to the location of fluids. The owner’s manual for your vehicle should have a layout of where to find all of fluid locations and will give you instructions on how to check them properly.
Replace wiper blades:
It is very important that you make sure you change wiper blades on a regular basis. When wiper blades tear and crack it can leave streaks on your windshield. Streaks on your windshield can cause limited visibility especially in inclement weather which can cause a whole chain of dangerous events such as an accident. It is a smart choice to check wiper blades right before frequent rainy seasons or when the weather gets bad.
Check lights on your vehicle:
The lights on your vehicle should always be working properly to save you from getting in an accident or receiving a ticket. These lights include turn signals, hazard lights, brake lights, taillights, and headlights. When a light is not working properly, that is grounds for a police officer to pull you over and give you a ticket. Also, it would be very difficult for someone to see you stopping in time if your brake light was out, for example.
Check tire pressure:
It is very important for tire pressure to be checked regularly in order to prevent problems with your vehicle. Some newer vehicles have a Tire Pressure Monitoring system, however for those older vehicles that do not contain this system you will need to make sure you manually check the tire pressure. The suggested timeframe to check the pressure is at least once per month on average. Refer to your vehicle’s owner manual to find out the best practice.
